چکیده

The quasiparticle spectra in the metallic rutile and insulating monoclinic phases of VO2 are shown to be dominated by local Coulomb interactions. In the rutile phase the small orbital polarization among V 3d t2g states leads to weak static but strong dynamical correlations. In the monoclinic phase the large 3d orbital polarization caused by the VuV Peierls distortion gives rise to strong static correlations which are shown to be the primary cause of the insulating behavior.

Multisite versus multiorbital Coulomb correlations studied within finite-temperature exact diagonalization dynamical mean-field theory

The influence of short-range Coulomb correlations on the Mott transition in the single-band Hubbard model at half filling is studied within cellular dynamical mean-field theory for square and triangular lattices. Finitetemperature exact diagonalization is used to investigate correlations within two-, three-, and four-site clusters. Transforming the nonlocal self-energy from a site basis to a mo...

Metal-insulator transition in VO2: a Peierls-Mott-Hubbard mechanism

The electronic structure of VO2 is studied in the frameworks of local density approximation (LDA) and LDA+U to give a quantitative description of the metal-insulator (MI) transition in this system. It is found that, both structural distortion and the local Coulomb interaction, play important roles in the transition. An optical gap, comparable to the experimental value has been obtained in the m...

Stability of a metallic state in the two-orbital Hubbard model

Electron correlations in the two-orbital Hubbard model at half-filling are investigated by combining dynamical mean field theory with the exact diagonalization method. We systematically study how the interplay of the intraand inter-band Coulomb interactions, together with the Hund coupling, affects the metal-insulator transition. It is found that if the intraand interband Coulomb interactions a...

Computation of the correlated metal-insulator transition in vanadium dioxide from first principles.

Vanadium dioxide (VO2) is a paradigmatic example of a strongly correlated system that undergoes a metal-insulator transition at a structural phase transition. To date, this transition has necessitated significant post hoc adjustments to theory in order to be described properly. Here we report standard state-of-the-art first principles quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) calculations of the structural dep...
